The festivities of Ladakh are a high-spirited testament to the Buddhist influence across the region. The deep-rooted cultures and traditions can be witnessed through its festive celebrations hosted at its most prominent attractions like the Buddhist Monasteries. These monasteries are mostly perched on a hilltop from where you can enjoy incredible valley views. The unique heritage of Ladakh creates the perfect setting for celebrating festivals with vast pomp and grandeur.
The finest example is the most-awaited Hemis Festival of Ladakh. It is a 2-day cultural fiesta marks the birth of Lord Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), an 8th century Buddhist Lama who introduced Tantric Buddhism in Tibet. It is hosted at the most famous and richest monastery of the region, the Hemis Monastery that dates back to almost 300 years old. The main highlights of this event is the masked Cham dance by local monks and the display of big-sized Thangka paintings (handmade paintings) decorated with semi-precious stones. The dance performance of vibrantly-dressed monks adorned with catchy headgears is a captivating sight to watch. The whole aura of this yearly celebration is truly magnetic and worth an experience.
Please note that the Hemis Festival is a grand cultural festival so kindly pay respect to the environment and traditional customs. As the festival is hosted at a sacred site, you are requested to dress appropriately. Also, photography is not allowed at the prayer hall and the museum.
